What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN uses the Internet as its transport mechanism, while maintaining the security of the data on the VPN. Once you are connected to the VPN, it's just like your computer is on that network.


Why do I want to connect to it?

So that you can access the files stored in your home directory, networked printers, and if allowed, your local workstation drives.

Is there anything I should be concerned about when using the VPN?

When you connect to the network, you will be given a public IP address from the 131.252.0.0 network.
If you use a firewall so that all your home computers have private addresses, then you have now exposed one of your computers to the Internet. We filter some ports with our routers, but for the security conscious this may not be adequate. You may want to consider using a personal firewall, like Zone Alarm on the computer from which you are connecting to the VPN.
