Establishing a VPN connection to CECS using Windows XP

NOTE: In order to create a VPN connection, you will need a previously configured Internet connection under Windows XP. This tutorial assumes that you have an established connection.

Important things to know before you start:

  • YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE A CECS WINDOWS ACCOUNT TO USE THE VPN. Please see one of our front desks for an account if you're eligible.
  • If you have a new account, you must have logged into a CECS Window box and changed your password (you will be prompted upon first login). If you don't do this, you will not be able to access the VPN.
  • If you are using wireless you must first connect to the vpn.cecs.pdx.edu wirless network.

Step 1: Start the "Make New Connection wizard".

  • To do this, click on Start->All Programs->Accessories->Communication->New Connection Wizard

You will see the following screen:

In the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, click Next.

Step 2: Choose "Connect to the network at my workplace".

Step 3: Choose: Virtual Private Network connection (as shown).

Step 4:Type in "PSU CECS VPN" or anything you will remember it by.

Step 5:Choose "do not dial an initial conneciton".

Step 6:Type in the domain name: 131.252.212.14 in the dialog box and click next.

Step 7:Choose: "Add shortcut..." (as shown).
Click "Finish".

You will then be presented with the connection window:

Final Step:Type in your CECS username (in the format CECS\username) and password, then click connect.

You will see something in the lower right-hand corner of your screen saying: "PSU CECS VPN network VPN is now connected".
You are now connected to our network!

You should have a new icon on your desktop that is a shortcut to the VPN connection. To connect in the future, just double click on it and enter your password.

You should also see an icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen; looks like two computers stacked) that indicates you are connected. When you are done working simply right click this icon and select Disconnect to close your connection.

Note: Once you are connected, you will remain connected for 4 hours, unless you are inactive for 30 minutes.
