Establishing a VPN connection to CECS using Windows 2000
NOTE: In order to create a VPN connection, you will need a previously configured Internet connection under Windows 2000. This tutorial assumes that you have an established connection.
Important things to know before you start:
- YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE A CECS WINDOWS ACCOUNT TO USE THE VPN. Please see one of our front desks for an account if you're eligible.
- If you have a new account, you must have logged into a CECS Window box and changed your password (you will be prompted upon first login). If you don't do this, you will not be able to access the VPN.
- If you are on wireless you must first connect to the vpn.cecs.pdx.edu wireless network.
If you are on wireless Connect to the vpn.cecs.pdx.edu wireless network
Step 1: Start the "Make New Connection wizard".
- To do this, click on Start->Settings->Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double click "Network and Dialup Connections".
- In the Network and Dialup Connections window, double click "Make New Connection".
You will see the following screen:

NOTE: If the machine you are using has never been configured for a dialup connection a dialog box may appear asking for information on how to dial a connection. This is not essential for a vpn connection, but you will not be able to proceed until some information is given. Simply entering an area code in the appropriate space and clicking ok should suffice. More extensive configuration of this dialog box is beyond the scope of this tutorial.
- Back in the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, click Next.
Step 2: Choose "Connect to a private network through the Internet" from the Network Connection dialog box and click Next.

Step 3: Enter the ip address: 131.252.212.14 in the dialog box and click Next.

Step 3: Decide whether to make the remote connection available to all users of your local computer or just to you and mark the appropriate choice. Click Next.

Step 4: Choose a name for the connection and enter it in the space provided on the dialog box. For this tutorial, we have chosen "CECS VPN". Optionally, choose to make a shortcut (recommended) to this connection on your desktop and mark the check box appropriately.

Step 6: Click Finish.
You will then be presented with the connection window:

Type in your CECS username (in the format CECS\username) and password, then click connect.
You will see something in the lower right-hand corner of your screen saying: "PSU CECS VPN network VPN is now connected". You are now connected to our network!
You should have a new icon on your desktop that is a shortcut to the VPN connection. To connect in the future, just double click on it and enter your password.
You should also see an icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen; looks like two computers stacked) that indicates you are connected. When you are done working simply right click this icon and select Disconnect to close your connection.

Note: Once you are connected, you will remain connected for 4 hours, unless you are inactive for 30 minutes.
