windows-2.gifThe CAT provides support for over 400 Wintel desktops throughout Maseeh College. While we deliver support to many faculty, staff and research desktops, our primary support focus is on the desktops in central Computing Labs.

Desktop Operating Systems:

Windows XP
Most of our primary supported desktops, especially those in the central labs, are running Windows XP.

Windows XP 64-Bit
Windows XP 64-Bit is available upon request for special purpose machines. Some supported software (eg. Matlab) is available for the 64-bit platform however not all supported software is. One benefit you can realize by installing this operating system is the possibility of gaining access to more than 4 GB of RAM. The migration from a 32-bit to 64-bit O/S may not however benefit all 32-bit softwares. Complications due to device drivers, 32-bit emulation and other incompatibilities are the major disadvantages.

Windows 7/Windows 7 64-bit

Windows 7 if desired is available upon request for Faculty, Staff and special purpose machines.

Windows Vista/2000/ME/NT/98/95/3.1
We do not provide any supported configurations for these Microsoft operating systems.

Server OS
Our central servers, designed primarily to deliver the glue that keeps our desktops functioning, run Windows Server 2003.

Support Tiers
The "support tiers" concept refers to support we provide for desktop workstations on the Windows, Linux, or Solaris Unix platforms. Specific arrangements (particularly of Tier 2 systems) depend on the type of operating system and the intended use.

Written by Fester
Tuesday, 10 February 2009

The U3 software is prevalent on a wide variety of USB sticks (thumb drives).  We have found that our users seldom use the functionality of this software and are often unaware of its existence until their user profile fills up, causing disruptions to their work until things are cleaned up.

Disabling autorun as a security precaution on CAT supported Windows Systems Print
Written by Fester
Tuesday, 10 February 2009

A recent surge in attacks (notably the conficker worm) is using a capability known as "autorun" to travel from removable media to system and onward.

As a safety precaution, we intend to disable the "autorun" functionality on CAT supported Windows systems.
