The pictures are based on Mac OS X 10.4.9
This is a resonably secure way you can print via our CECS Windows print server to Maseeh College network printers.
Security Warning:
There is a slight security concern: this setup will save your CECS Windows password in plain text on your Mac in the file /etc/cups/printers.conf. This file is mode 0600 so only administrators (or sudoers) can read it, but if your Mac is ever lost, stolen, or compromised, you should change your CECS Windows password immediately. Hopefully Apple will implement the ability for CUPS to use the OS X keychain some day.
Other Prerequisites:
You have to have a Windows account to authenticate to the CECS Windows print server. Also, you need a driver file installed on your Mac for each type of printer you want to print to. Maseeh College uses fairly common printers so your Mac probably has drivers already installed.
Issues!
The latest CUPS update (as of July 2007) has broken samba-based printing. The fix is to download and install CUPS directly from their website. It's easy to do. Download the image file here.
Also, if your password has a '#' or '?' or anything else that's a special character in a URI, CUPS will break. Apple just bought CUPS, so maybe this software will get better soon...
If you are using PSU/Maseeh College wireless or a PUBLIC laptop jack (usually with a yellow network cable in a public lounge) you'll need to connect to the CECS VPN first.
